Lesson Plan: Multiplying Binomials Mathematics • 9th Grade
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to multiply two binomials using different methods such as FOIL or the vertical method.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- multiply two different binomials,
- use the FOIL method and grid method to facilitate the multiplication of two binomials,
- multiply a binomial by itself (i.e., square a binomial),
- multiply two binomials where the result is a difference of squares,
- find unknowns in algebraic expressions by multiplying binomials,
- solve geometric problems using the multiplication of binomials.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- multiplying monomials,
- multiplying monomials by algebraic expressions,

- the addition and subtraction of algebraic expressions,
- evaluating algebraic expressions.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- dividing algebraic expressions by monomials,
- multiplying a binomial with a polynomial including 3 or more terms,
- multiplying polynomials with 3 or more terms.
