Lesson Plan: Applications on Parametric Equations

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use parametric equations, with time as a parameter, to model motion in two dimensions.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • solve problems where two-dimensional motion is modeled using parametric equations, with time as the parameter, including
    • finding the coordinates of the start of the motion,
    • finding the distance something has traveled during its motion,
    • finding the missing parameters in the parametric equations,
    • identifying the range of the parametric equations using physical bounds.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • parametric equations,
  • graphs of parametric equations,
  • the domain and range of parametric equations,
  • finding the coordinates of the intersection between the parametric equations and the axes.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • the differentiation of parametric equations.
