Lesson Plan: Writing and Evaluating Formulas Mathematics
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to write a formula from a given description or figure and substitute numbers into a simple formula.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- write a formula from a worded description,
- write a formula from a given figure,
- complete a table of values for a given formula,
- evaluate a formula by substituting numeric values for one or more variables.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- algebraic conventions,
- writing and evaluating algebraic expressions,
- adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing positive and negative integers.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- evaluating formulas by substituting fractional or decimal values,
- finding unknowns by rearranging formulas.
