Lesson Plan: Writing and Evaluating Formulas Mathematics

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • write a formula from a worded description,
  • write a formula from a given figure,
  • complete a table of values for a given formula,
  • evaluate a formula by substituting numeric values for one or more variables.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • algebraic conventions,
  • writing and evaluating algebraic expressions,
  • adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing positive and negative integers.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • evaluating formulas by substituting fractional or decimal values,
  • finding unknowns by rearranging formulas.
