Lesson Plan: Friction and Motion
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to define friction and investigate its effect on the motion of objects in contact.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- define the term friction,
- investigate how friction affects the motion of an object,
- define and demonstrate rolling and static friction,
- compare friction on static, rolling, and sliding objects,
- explain that friction produces heat.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- pull and push forces.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- air and water resistance,
- the advantages and disadvantages of friction,
- ways of reducing or increasing friction,
- details of why friction on rolling wheels is less than friction on a sliding object.
