Lesson Plan: Mental Subtraction of Numbers up to 10 000 Mathematics • 4th Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to subtract two numbers with up to four digits mentally by apply a variety of strategies.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • subtract three- or four-digit numbers from four-digit numbers mentally by counting back,
  • subtract three- or four-digit numbers from four-digit numbers mentally by breaking the subtrahend apart,
  • subtract three- or four-digit numbers from four-digit numbers mentally using compensation,
  • select the most effective mental strategy to subtract a three- or four-digit number from a four-digit number.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • partitioning three- and four-digit numbers,
  • using place value models to represent three- and four-digit numbers.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • subtracting numbers with more than four digits,
  • column subtraction.
