Lesson Plan: Velocity Physics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to find velocity as the rate of change of displacement, explaining the similarities and differences between speed and velocity.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • use the formula 𝑣=𝑠𝑡, recognizing that 𝑠 is displacement rather than distance,
  • identify velocity as being a vector quantity the magnitude of which is the scalar quantity speed,
  • demonstrate that multiple velocity values can be combined to find an average velocity,
  • compare average speeds to average velocities for objects that undergo changes of direction.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • speed,
  • displacement.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • acceleration.
