Lesson Plan: Counting Money: Pence Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to find the value of a group of coins in pence, by counting in 2s, 5s, 10s, and 20s within 100.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • recognize and use the symbol “p” for pence,
  • use their 2𝑥 table to help count in 20s,
  • count in 2s, 5s, 10s, and 20s to find the total of a group of coins, with and without models,
  • investigate the most efficient ways of adding a group of coins.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • counting in 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s,
  • recognizing coins used in the UK,
  • identifying the value of each coin.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • counting in pounds,
  • the symbol of the pound,
  • counting using the 50p coin.
