This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use set notation with Venn diagrams and calculate probabilities using Venn diagrams.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • understand and use set notation to describe the complement, union, and intersection of sets as well as the number of elements or probabilities of an event,
  • determine the number of elements in
    • a set,
    • the complement of a set,
    • the union of sets,
    • the intersection of sets,
and use this to calculate probabilities,
  • use Venn diagrams to represent sets and calculate probabilities,
  • determine if sets are mutually exclusive and/or independent using Venn diagrams.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • simple probabilities, including the complement of an event,
  • independent events,
  • mutually exclusive events,
  • Venn diagrams.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • conditional probability,
  • probability formulas, addition formula, and conditional probability formula,
  • the difference of two sets.
