Lesson Plan: Translations Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to translate points, line segments, and shapes given the direction and magnitude of the translation.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • translate points, line segments, and shapes given the direction and magnitude of the translation,
  • construct parallel lines in order to translate points, line segments, and shapes,
  • identify the image of a shape after a given translation,
  • state the direction and magnitude of a translation given the original shape and its image after the translation.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the concepts of reflections, rotations, and translations,
  • constructing a line segment that is parallel to and equal in length to another line segment.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • translations in the coordinate plane,
  • combining transformations,
  • vectors.
