Lesson Plan: Counting Money: Pounds Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to count in 2s, 5s, 10s, and 20s within 100 to find the value of an amount of money.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • identify and use the pound symbol (£), recognizing that it is written before the monetary value,
  • recognize that coins and notes are used to represent amounts in pounds,
  • use models to count in 1s, 2s, 5s, 10s, and 20s to find the value of a group of notes,
  • group the same coins or notes when counting multiple denominations of money,
  • order coins and notes from largest to smallest to aid counting.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • counting in 1s, 2s, 5s, 10s, and 20s,
  • recognizing coins and notes used in the UK,
  • identifying the value of each coin or note.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • counting pounds and pence.
