Lesson Plan: Dividing Unit Fractions by Whole Numbers
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to divide unit fractions by whole numbers using models, such as tape diagrams and number lines.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- use models (shapes, bar models, and number lines) to represent unit fractions divided into equal parts and identify the value of one of these parts,
- divide a unit fraction by a whole number greater than 1.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the role of numerators and denominators, specifically with reference to unit fractions,
- representing unit fractions using bar models/tape diagrams, number lines, and shape-based models.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- dividing proper fractions by whole numbers.
