Objectives

Students will be able to

  • use models (shapes, bar models, and number lines) to represent unit fractions divided into equal parts and identify the value of one of these parts,
  • divide a unit fraction by a whole number greater than 1.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the role of numerators and denominators, specifically with reference to unit fractions,
  • representing unit fractions using bar models/tape diagrams, number lines, and shape-based models.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • dividing proper fractions by whole numbers.
