Lesson Plan: Beat Frequencies Physics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to relate the beat frequency produced by the superposition of two waves to the waves’ frequencies.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • recognize that two waveforms that interfere produce a resultant waveform that has a frequency different to either of the interfering waveforms,
  • relate two waveforms with similar frequencies to their resultant waveform graphically,
  • recognize that the frequencies of two interfering waveforms, π‘“οŠ§ and π‘“οŠ¨, are related to the frequency of their resultant waveform, π‘“οŒ», by the equation 𝑓=|π‘“βˆ’π‘“|.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • superpositions of waves.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • electromagnetic waves.
