This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use integration by substitution for indefinite integrals.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • identify situations where a substitution can be used to simplify an integral,
  • choose an appropriate substitution, 𝑢, in order to solve an integral, where both 𝑢 and 𝑢 appear as factors of the integrand,
  • apply a substitution to an indefinite integral in order to solve it and reverse the substitution to give answers in terms of the original variable.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the chain rule,
  • indefinite integrals.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • definite integrals,
  • integration by parts,
  • inverse trigonometric functions,
  • hyperbolic functions.
