Lesson Plan: Systems of Exponential Equations

This lesson plan includes the objectives and prerequisites of the lesson teaching students how to find values that satisfy two exponential equations in two variables simultaneously.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • solve systems of equations of the form 𝑎×𝑎=𝑏, 𝑎+𝑎=𝑐 for constants 𝑎, 𝑏, and 𝑐 and variables 𝑥 and 𝑦, where 𝑏 is a power of 𝑎 and the roots of the quadratic equation 𝑧𝑐𝑧+𝑏=0 are powers of 𝑎,
  • solve systems of equations of the form 𝑝+𝑞=𝑟, 𝑝+𝑞=𝑠, where 𝑝, 𝑞, 𝑟, and 𝑠 are powers of 𝑎 fixed prime,
  • solve systems of equations of the form 𝑎=𝑏(), 𝑐=𝑑(), where 𝑓 and 𝑔 are polynomials in 𝑥 and 𝑦, 𝑎 and 𝑏 are powers of a fixed number, and 𝑐 and 𝑑 are powers of another fixed number,
  • solve systems of equations of the form 𝑝+𝑎𝑦=𝑏, 𝑝𝑎𝑦=𝑐, where 𝑝 is a prime, 𝑎 is a constant, and 𝑏+𝑐 is a power of 𝑝,
  • solve systems of equations of the form 𝑝+𝑞=𝑏, 𝑝𝑞=𝑐, where 𝑝 is a prime, 𝑎 is a constant, and 𝑏+𝑐 is a power of 𝑝,
  • solve systems of exponential equations graphically.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • solving systems of linear equations,
  • solving quadratic equations,
  • laws of exponents,
  • logarithms.
