Lesson Plan: Units of Energy Physics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to convert between the SI units of energy, joules, and the units of energy more commonly used to describe energy production, such as kilowatt-hour.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • recall what a watt-hour is,
  • recall what a kilowatt-hour is,
  • convert between J, Wh, kWh, MWh, GWh, and TWh.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • what energy is,
  • the SI unit prefixes.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • any other units of energy, like electron volt, the British thermal units, or metric horsepower-hours.
