Lesson Plan: The Mean of a Data Set Mathematics • 6th Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to calculate the mean of data represented in different ways and answer questions involving the mean of a data set.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • calculate the mean of data represented in graphs,
  • analyze how outliers affect the mean of a data set,
  • solve problems involving the mean of a data set.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • finding the mean of a list of values,
  • interpreting graphs, including bar graphs, pictograms, stem-and-leaf plots, line plots, line graphs, and tables.

Exclusions

Students will not cover
