Lesson Plan: Circumscribed Polygons Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to identify circumscribed polygons and use their properties to find areas or missing lengths.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • understand that a circumscribed polygon is a polygon that surrounds a circle with each of its sides tangent to the circle,
  • use given side lengths of a circumscribed polygon or the radius of its inscribed circle to find
    • a missing side length of the polygon,
    • the perimeter of the polygon,
    • the area of the polygon.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • areas of triangles,
  • tangents of a circle,
  • exterior tangents to a circle meeting at a point having an equal length.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • equations of circles.
