Objectives

Students will be able to

  • use models to show what happens when multiplying by 1 or by 0,
  • recognize that when a number is multiplied by 1 (or 1 is multiplied by a number), the product is the same as that number,
  • recognize that when a number is multiplied by 0 (or 0 is multiplied by a number), the product is zero,
  • apply the above rules to calculate products or find missing factors.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the concept of multiplication as 𝑥 groups of 𝑦 or 𝑦 groups of 𝑥.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • multiplication facts greater than 10×10,
  • solving word problems,
  • the terms identity property of multiplication or zero property of multiplication.
