Lesson Plan: Sample and Population Standard Deviation Mathematics • 9th Grade
This lesson plan includes the objectives and prerequisites of the lesson teaching students how to interpret the variation in data by learning about sample and population standard deviation.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- understand the difference between sample and population standard deviation,
- understand why a correction is needed to obtain an unbiased estimate for the sample standard deviation,
- calculate the sample standard deviation for a list of data, a frequency table, or a grouped frequency table.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- sampling a population,
- standard deviation,
- calculating population standard deviation.
