Lesson Plan: The Number Zero Mathematics • Kindergarten

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to read, write, and model zero.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • discuss the meaning of 0,
  • read and write the numeral 0,
  • use 0 to describe the number of objects in a group,
  • show quantities written as a numeral.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • reading, writing, and representing the numbers 1–5,
  • cardinality of the numbers from 1–5 (one-to-one correspondence),
  • using objects, five frames, number lines, dots, and fingers to represent the numbers from 1–5.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • one more than/less than,
  • other 1-digit numbers,
  • the word form of 0.
