Lesson Plan: Adding and Subtracting Square Roots Mathematics • 10th Grade
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to add and subtract square roots and how to use that to simplify expressions.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- simplify the addition and subtraction of square roots using the rules of addition (i.e., associativity, commutativity, and inverses),
- recognize the link between repeated addition of square roots and multiplication,
- use the property to simplify the addition of expressions.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the real number system,
- properties of addition over the real numbers.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- multiplying and dividing square roots,
- rationalizing the denominators of expressions with square roots,
- cube roots.
