Lesson Plan: Relative Clauses English

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use relative clauses to offer necessary and extra information about amazing people.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • understand the difference between defining and nondefining relative clauses,
  • use defining relative clauses to give necessary information about a person, a thing, or a place,
  • use relative clauses beginning with that, who, or “preposition + whom” for a person,
  • use relative clauses beginning with where for place,
  • use relative clauses beginning with that and which for objects and animals,
  • use relative clauses with commas to give additional information about a person or a thing,
  • understand that the relative pronoun that cannot be used with nondefining relative clauses.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • wh-words (e.g., who, which and where).

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • using the relative pronouns whose, and when,
  • omitting relative pronouns as objects (e.g., The film (that) I wanted to see is very long).
