Lesson Plan: Milliliters Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to explain the relationship between milliliters and liters, read volume measurements in milliliters on a labeled container, and use milliliters to solve problems involving volume and capacity.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • explain the relationship between liters and milliliters,
  • estimate the size of a milliliter of water,
  • read volume measurements in milliliters on a container marked in milliliters,
  • use measurements in milliliters to solve problems involving volume and capacity.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • nonstandard units of volume and capacity,
  • comparing measurements such as length and mass,
  • estimation strategies,
  • vertical number lines,
  • the terms volume and capacity,
  • liters.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • measurements expressed in cubic centimeters,
  • fluid ounces, quarts, and other nonmetric units,
  • measurements other than volume and capacity.
