Lesson Plan: Reading Picture Graphs Mathematics • 1st Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to read and make picture graphs, where each picture represents a count of one, to find how many items are in a category and which category has the most or least items.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • answer questions about data in a picture graph,
  • compare categories in a picture graph,
  • complete a picture graph.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • using graphs to sort objects,
  • comparing groups of objects by counting up to 10.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • picture graphs with more than 10 objects,
  • symbols or pictures that represent more than one object,
  • adding or finding the difference between categories.
