Lesson Plan: Calculating Density Physics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use the formula 𝜌 = 𝑀/𝑉 to calculate the densities of different materials and objects.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • understand the difference between density and mass,
  • use 𝜌=𝑀𝑉 in all permutations,
  • use 𝜌=𝑀𝑉 in combination with a formula for the volume of an object: for spheres, 𝑉=43𝜋𝑟; for cubes, 𝑉=𝑑; for rectangular prisms, 𝑉=𝑤𝑙.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • what mass is,
  • what volume is,
  • how the mass and volume of an object can be measured,
  • the units for mass and volume.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • integration of volumes of any kind,
  • shapes other than spheres, cubes, and rectangular prisms (including thin sheets), where the student has to know the formula for the volume.
