Lesson Plan: Calculating Density Physics
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use the formula 𝜌 = 𝑀/𝑉 to calculate the densities of different materials and objects.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- understand the difference between density and mass,
- use in all permutations,
- use in combination with a formula for the volume of an object: for spheres, ; for cubes, ; for rectangular prisms, .
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- what mass is,
- what volume is,
- how the mass and volume of an object can be measured,
- the units for mass and volume.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- integration of volumes of any kind,
- shapes other than spheres, cubes, and rectangular prisms (including thin sheets), where the student has to know the formula for the volume.
