Lesson Plan: Structure of Cell Membranes Biology • First Year of Secondary School
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the structure and function of membranes and how factors affecting membrane permeability can be investigated.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- state that eukaryotic cells are surrounded by a single membrane that is formed from a phospholipid bilayer,
- describe the roles of membranes within cells and at their surface,
- describe the fluid mosaic models of membrane structure,
- recall that some organelles are surrounded by single or double membranes,
- outline the effects of temperature and solvents on membrane structure and permeability,
- describe practical investigations into factors affecting membrane structure using colorimetry.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the location of membranes in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells,
- the role of a membrane in controlling materials’ entry into and exit out of the cell,
- the structure of phospholipids and globular proteins.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- modes of transport across membranes.
