Lesson Plan: Alleles Biology
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to define and explain the key terms in genetics and explain how alleles provide genetic variation in humans.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- define the terms chromosome, gene, and allele,
- explain what is meant by dominant and recessive alleles,
- understand that some alleles, such as those that control blood groups in humans, can be codominant,
- recognize when alleles for a gene are homozygous or heterozygous,
- understand that a genotype is all the genes of an organism, and the interaction of these genes is expressed in the phenotype.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- DNA as the unit of inheritance.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- genetic diagrams (Punnett squares).
