Lesson Plan: Limestone Chemistry

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • describe the manufacture of lime and slaked lime from calcium carbonate,
  • list uses of limestone, lime, and slaked lime,
  • evaluate the environmental concerns related to large-scale quarrying.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • simple chemical changes,
  • using lime water to test for carbon dioxide.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • how limestone is formed in Earth.
