This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use the distributive property of multiplication for addition and subtraction to rewrite numerical expressions and evaluate them.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • evaluate an expression of the form 𝑎(𝑏+𝑐) by using the distributive property,
  • evaluate an expression of the form 𝑎(𝑏𝑐) by using the distributive property,
  • evaluate an expression of the form 𝑎𝑏+𝑎𝑐 by using the distributive property,
  • evaluate an expression of the form 𝑎𝑏𝑎𝑐 by using the distributive property.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the order of operations,
  • multiplying numbers in parentheses.
