Lesson Plan: Derivatives of Inverse Trigonometric Functions Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to find the derivatives of the inverses of trigonometric functions.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • use implicit differentiation or the inverse function theorem to find the derivatives of inverse trigonometric functions,
  • recall the derivatives of the inverse functions arcsin, arccos, arctan, arccot, and arcsec.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the chain, product, and quotient rules for differentiation,
  • differentiating polynomial, trigonometric, rational, and exponential functions,
  • the inverse function theorem,
  • implicit differentiation.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • combining the product, chain, and quotient rules for differentiation.
