Lesson Plan: Magnetism: Magnetic Fields Science

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe a magnet’s magnetic field, explain how a compass works, and explain how magnetic fields are used in medicine.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • identify that magnets can act at a distance,
  • define a magnetic field,
  • describe how we can see a magnetic field using iron filings,
  • identify a picture of a magnetic field seen with iron filings,
  • explain how a compass works,
  • describe why a compass is useful,
  • describe how to use a compass to plot the magnetic field of a bar magnet,
  • identify a correctly drawn magnetic field diagram,
  • explain how magnetic fields are used in medicine.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the poles of a magnet,
  • the terms attract and repel,
  • how the poles of two magnets will react to one another,
  • magnetic materials,
  • the fact that magnets can work through other materials,
  • the fact that magnets can move some objects without touching them.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • visualizing the magnetic fields of two repelling/attracting magnets,
  • how magnets are used in transportation.
