Lesson Plan: Maintaining Biodiversity

This lesson plan includes the objectives and prerequisites of the lesson teaching students how to describe the strategies used to maintain and improve biodiversity.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • describe how maintaining biodiversity increases the stability of an ecosystem,
  • give examples of humans benefiting from biodiversity,
  • give examples of strategies to maintain biodiversity, including breeding programs, protection of habitats, reintroduction programs, reduction of deforestation, and recycling,
  • explain some of the benefits and challenges of maintaining local and global biodiversity.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the term biodiversity,
  • the principle of how an ecosystem works,
  • different examples of positive and negative human interactions within ecosystems and their impact on biodiversity.
