Lesson Plan: Contraception Biology • Third Year of Secondary School

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to explain how hormones are used in contraception and evaluate the effectiveness of hormonal and nonhormonal methods of contraception.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • state that the aim of contraception is the prevention of pregnancy,
  • explain the use of the hormones estrogen and progesterone in contraception and the prevention of pregnancy,
  • evaluate hormonal and nonhormonal methods of contraception, including oral contraceptives, injections/implants, condoms, diaphragms, IUDs, and surgical methods of preventing pregnancy and reducing transmission of STIs.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the fact that sexual intercourse and the fertilization of an egg will result in offspring,
  • the hormonal control of the menstrual cycle by estrogen and progesterone.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • the symptoms of sexually transmitted diseases.
