Lesson Plan: Choosing Seconds, Minutes, or Hours Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to measure how long an activity takes in seconds, minutes, or hours and decide which of these units is most appropriate.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • decide whether to measure an activity in seconds, minutes, or hours,
  • estimate the length of time it will take to complete an activity in seconds, minutes, or hours,
  • recognize equipment to measure time in seconds, minutes, or hours.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the hour and minute hand on an analog clock.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • telling time,
  • elapsed time.
