Lesson Plan: Mechanical Work Physics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to calculate the work done by a force that acts on an object over a distance.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • use the formula 𝑊=𝐹𝑑 in all combinations,
  • relate the work done on an object to the change in the energy of the object,
  • recognize that energy can be dissipated.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the principle of the conservation of energy,
  • Newton’ second law of motion,
  • Newton’s third law of motion,
  • kinematic formulas (SUVAT).

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • two-dimensional motion.
