Lesson Plan: Multiplication with Arrays Mathematics • 3rd Grade
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use arrays to find the product of two numbers up to 5 rows or columns.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- use arrays to find the products of numbers up to 25,
- use arrays to recognize that numbers can be multiplied in any order and that the result stays the same,
- use repeated addition to find the product of two one-digit numbers,
- skip count to find the product of two one-digit numbers using knowledge of multiples.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- defining arrays by the number of rows and columns,
- finding the total number of objects in an array using repeated addition.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- using recall of multiplication facts,
- writing expressions using the multiplication symbol.
