Lesson Plan: Converting Capacity: Metric Units Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to convert between and compare whole numbers of cubic meters, cubic decimeters, cubic centimeters, liters, and milliliters and solve word problems.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • describe the relationship between metric units of volume and units of capacity,
  • convert between metric units of measurements for volume and capacity,
  • compare capacity by converting between different metric units,
  • solve problems by converting between metric measurements of capacity.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the relationship between liters and milliliters and how to convert between them,
  • multiplying and dividing by powers of 10.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • converting between non-metric measurements of capacity.
