Lesson Plan: Subtracting Tens Mathematics • 1st Grade
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to subtract a multiple of ten from a multiple of ten and model this with place value equipment.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- model subtraction of two multiples of ten using place value blocks,
- count back in tens to subtract,
- use known facts to subtract two multiples of 10,
- solve word problems involving subtraction of two multiples of ten.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- subtracting one-digit numbers,
- modeling two-digit numbers using place value blocks,
- place value of two-digit numbers.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- subtracting tens from two-digit numbers that are not multiples of 10,
- subtracting tens from numbers more than 90,
- subtracting two-digit numbers.
