This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to model real-world examples on linear equations.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • understand that if two variables are proportional to each other (i.e., 𝑦𝑥 or 𝑦=𝑘𝑥), then their graph is a straight line through the origin,
  • determine whether a linear model is appropriate for given data by considering its graph,
  • write an equation for the line that models the relationship between two variables,
  • solve real-world problems by considering the linear model.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • equations for straight lines,
  • gradients,
  • 𝑥- and 𝑦-intercepts.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • linear regression,
  • modeling data not governed by a linear relationship.
