This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to derive formulae for projectile motion and use them in problems.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • derive the following formulas to relate the range, times of flight, and equation of trajectory of projectiles to their launch speeds and angles:
    • time of flight = 2𝑈𝛼𝑔sin,
    • horizontal range = 𝑈2𝛼𝑔sin,
    • time to reach greatest height = 𝑈𝛼𝑔sin,
    • equation of trajectory = 𝑦=𝑥𝛼𝑔𝑥1+𝛼2𝑈tantan,
  • use the formulas to answer questions about the trajectory of a projectile.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • projectile motion at any angle,
  • horizontal and vertical components of projectile motion,
  • graphs of projectile motion.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • forces applied to a projectile in flight (other than gravitational force).
