Lesson Plan: Place Value of Four-Digit Numbers Mathematics
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to read and model 4-digit numbers and state the value of each digit in a 4-digit number.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- model 4-digit numbers using place value counters,
- model 4-digit numbers in a place value table,
- state the value of any digit in a 4-digit number,
- explain how the value of a digit in a 4-digit number can change based on its place.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- modeling thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones using base ten blocks,
- writing multiples of 1,000 using numerals and words,
- place value of 3-digit numbers.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- comparing or ordering 4-digit numbers,
- modeling numbers with more than four digits.
