Objectives

Students will be able to

  • solve one-step addition and subtraction problems,
  • solve one-step comparison problems,
  • solve two-step problems,
  • model problems with bar models,
  • write equations to represent problems.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • using bar models to write equations that represent addition and subtraction word problems,
  • writing addition properties.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • representing problems using the standard algorithm (although this method can be used to calculate the answer).
