This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe combining a galvanometer with a multiplier resistor to design a DC Voltmeter.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • describe the appropriate connection of a galvanometer and multiplier resistor to produce a voltmeter,
  • explain the required resistance ratio of the galvanometer and multiplier,
  • calculate the measurement range of a voltmeter from the current required for a full-scale deflection of the galvanometer and the ratio of the resistance of the galvanometer to the multiplier.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • galvanometers,
  • Ohm’s law,
  • parallel circuits.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • ammeters,
  • ohmmeters,
  • calculations of magnetic fields.
