Lesson Plan: Arc Length of Parametric Curves Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use integration to find the arc length of a parametrically defined curve.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • know the formula for the arc length of a curve given parametrically,
  • use integration to find the arc lengths of parametric curves.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • parametric curves in two dimensions,
  • derivatives of parametric equations,
  • finding arc lengths of explicitly defined curves by integration,
  • integration of polynomial, trigonometric, and exponential functions,
  • integration by substitution,
  • integration by parts.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • planar motion using parametric equations.
