Lesson Plan: Celestial Bodies in Space

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe celestial bodies other than stars and planets.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • name some celestial bodies other than stars and planets in our solar system, such as comets, asteroids, meteoroids, and meteors,
  • identify moons as celestial bodies and identify their pattern of movement around the planets.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the solar system,
  • the fact that the Sun is our star,
  • the presence of other planets in our solar system.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • the shapes of the surfaces of moons,
  • the time span of the revolution of Earth’s moon,
  • how ideas about the solar system have changed over time or how celestial bodies are formed,
  • the number of moons orbiting each planet.
