Lesson Plan: Reactions of Esters Chemistry

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the reactions of esters and predict what products are formed.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • describe the reactants, catalysts, and reaction conditions for the acid and base hydrolysis of esters,
  • describe the reactants, catalysts, and reaction conditions for the saponification of large esters,
  • describe the reactants, catalysts, and reaction conditions for the ammonolysis of esters,
  • describe the reactants, catalysts, and reaction conditions for the polymerization of esters.
  • predict the products of the above reactions given the reactants, or vice versa.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • properties of esters,
  • polymerization.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • mechanisms for the reactions,
  • any reactions other than those listed above,
  • reactions of cyclic esters.
