Lesson Plan: Sorting Quadrilaterals Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to sort and classify quadrilaterals by their attributes and name them in more than one way.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • define and identify quadrilaterals,
  • compare and contrast quadrilaterals,
  • name quadrilaterals in more than one way (e.g., identify a shape as a square and also as a rhombus),
  • use a Venn diagram to find common features among quadrilaterals,
  • match sets of quadrilaterals with the rules used for sorting them into groups.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the concept of a polygon,
  • the attributes and definitions of four-sided polygons such as squares, rectangles, and parallelograms,
  • parallel and perpendicular lines,
  • the use of Venn diagrams.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • the congruence of shapes, lines, or angles,
  • angle measurements (other than right angles),
  • geometric notation such as parallel line markings.
