Lesson Plan: Stratified Random Sampling Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to take a stratified, or layered, random sample.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • understand what stratified, or layered, random sampling is and how it is performed,
  • determine if stratified random sampling has been used as a sampling method in a real-life context,
  • how to take a stratified random sample.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • working with data, such as organizing data in a table, displaying data in a graph, and calculating averages,
  • sampling and population methods,
  • proportional reasoning.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • other sampling methods,
  • biased and unbiased sampling.
