This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to find the probability of a simple event.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • calculate the probability of a simple event given the number of occurrences of a desired event divided by the total number of outcomes,
  • determine, from a frequency table, the number of occurrences of a desired event and the total number of outcomes in order to find the probability of that event,
  • determine, given a context, the number of occurrences of a desired event and the total number of events in order to find the probability of that event,
  • determine whether the probability of an event is certain, likely, even, unlikely, or impossible given the probability.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the concept of sample space and outcomes,
  • set notation,
  • properties of numbers such as primes, factors, and multiples,
  • fractions, percentages, and decimals.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • calculating the probability of operations on events,
  • the probability of the complement of an event.
