Lesson Plan: Dividing Decimals: Decimal Quotients
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to multiply by 10 or 100 when dividing by a decimal to convert the problem to one where we divide by whole numbers and place the decimal point in the answer.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- multiply decimals by 10 or 100 so that the dividend and the divisor are whole numbers and then divide,
- understand that multiplying both the dividend and the divisor by the same number will not change the quotient,
- calculate the quotient using long division,
- place the decimal point correctly in the quotient.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- multiplying decimals by 10, 100, and 1,000,
- how to write decimals (with up to two decimal places) as a decimal fraction with a denominator of 10 or 100.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- dividing decimals where the quotient has more than three decimal places.
